# Our story

In 2021, the app had exactly one user: Vince. Eight versions later, more than a million students have it on their phones.

## 2021 · The very first version

Vince codes his own take on Pronote, just for himself. Version 2? A small update, nothing wild.

## 2022 · We open up the code

The code goes open source, with an interface we rebuilt our way. And then the first users show up.

## 2022 · Enter the butterfly

The first version with the logo we still use today. The rest? Slow, buggy, definitely not our best. It didn’t last long.

## 2023 · Pronote+ becomes Papillon

A new name, and we’re not just about Pronote anymore. A big one: the home screen, grade cards, how each grade affects your average, and ways to make the app your own.

## 2023 · Hello, React Native

Our first React Native version, and the interface starts to look like the one you know. Along the way: your average’s history and the very first Papicons, our own icons.

## 2024 · We redo everything

Tom Things redesigns the app from scratch. We add Papillon Magic (our AI), notifications and even more customization. That’s when things take off.

## 2025 · Our latest version

Our most complete version yet: a new interface by Tom Things, and an app that really fits in on iOS and Android. If you’re curious, here’s every step the interface went through.

## Then it all snowballed

100,000 users by the end of 2024 → 1 million in early 2025

## Today

> I started Papillon in 2021 because I wanted a more modern interface for my schedule, homework and grades. Five years later, we’re still students writing code for other students, and the code is still open. That part isn’t changing.

## What’s next?

We want every student, from middle school to university, to have an app that’s free, fast and respects their privacy. The code stays open, and we keep building it with the community.

Papillon is free, with no ads.
